Michelle Meertens is Deputy General Counsel of the Institute of International Bankers. She is a central bank trained attorney with a multidisciplinary background that spans banking law, regulation, supervision, and policy.
Michelle worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for more than a decade, serving in several capacities, including as Counsel and Assistant Vice President, Corporate Secretary, and Deputy Head of the Financial Infrastructure Department in the Financial Institution Supervision Group. Michelle also spent several years working internationally at Kapronasia, a fintech consultancy, and domestically as Senior Regulatory Counsel at Mastercard.
Michelle holds a JD from New York University’s School of Law, an MPA in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, and a BA from Yale University. She is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the Economic Club of New York.
Michelle has lived abroad for several years and traveled around the world, which has highlighted for her the importance of recognizing and appreciating various cultures and perspectives. She supports the work of the Reconciliation League because she believes that the leaders of tomorrow must have both the courage to listen to divergent points of view and the necessary skills to communicate effectively across differences. Only then can they improve the tenor of our social discourse and create a more just and inclusive society.
